Position Overview
The Center Medical Specialist plays an important role in maintaining donor safety and providing quality medical support throughout the plasma donation process. You will assess donors, review medical histories, respond to adverse reactions or injuries, and determine whether individuals meet the medical requirements for donation.
This position combines clinical responsibilities with patient communication, donor education, and team support. It is well suited for an EMT or Paramedic seeking an alternative to traditional emergency response work.

Key Responsibilities
As a Center Medical Specialist, your primary responsibilities will include:
- Conduct donor physical assessments and review medical histories to determine eligibility for plasma donation.
- Evaluate information related to previous illnesses, medical conditions, and medications to confirm continued donor suitability.
- Establish positive relationships with donors and provide a professional, welcoming experience.
- Protect donor and employee privacy by following all confidentiality and healthcare privacy requirements.
- Explain potential risks and safety considerations associated with plasma donation.
- Provide donors with general health information and guidance when screening results require additional education or counseling.
- Respond to donor injuries, medical reactions, and other adverse events and provide appropriate care within your scope of practice.
- Monitor donor health and take appropriate action when a donor’s condition changes.
- Support employee training and help team members understand applicable medical and safety procedures.
- Participate in the employee Hepatitis B vaccination program as assigned.
- Maintain accurate medical documentation and follow established center procedures.
- Follow applicable state regulations, clinical protocols, infection-control practices, and workplace safety requirements.
Required Qualifications
To be considered for this EMT/Paramedic healthcare position, candidates must:
- Hold a current EMT-Basic, Advanced EMT, or Paramedic certification/license recognized in the state of employment.
- Meet all applicable state and regulatory requirements for professional practice.
- Maintain current CPR certification.
- Successfully complete required training and maintain all necessary credentials.
Physical and Work Environment Requirements
This position is performed in a plasma donation center and involves a combination of sitting, standing, walking, bending, reaching, and other physical activities.
The position may require employees to:
- Remain standing or seated for extended periods during the workday.
- Bend, twist, squat, crouch, and reach as necessary to perform job duties.
- Frequently use both hands and fingers for precise clinical and equipment-related tasks.
- Lift items weighing approximately 15 pounds routinely, with occasional lifting of up to 50 pounds.
- Maintain adequate hearing and corrected near and distance vision for clinical responsibilities.
- Work independently while following written and verbal instructions.
- Adapt to changing workloads, operational needs, and donor situations.
- Communicate effectively with people from diverse backgrounds.
- Handle sensitive medical information professionally and confidentially.
Workplace Exposure and Safety
Because the position operates in a medical and plasma collection environment, employees may encounter:
- Biological fluids and potentially infectious materials.
- Laboratory and electrical medical equipment.
- Cold environments, including temperatures below 32°F when working around plasma freezers.
Appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), including gloves, protective eyewear, protective clothing, and cold-weather protective equipment, must be used when required.
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate is a licensed EMT, AEMT, or Paramedic with strong communication skills, sound clinical judgment, and a commitment to donor safety. Candidates should be comfortable performing medical assessments, responding to adverse events, educating donors, and working as part of a healthcare team.
