Job Overview

Pitt County Government is seeking qualified Paramedics, Advanced EMTs, and EMTs to provide emergency medical care and patient transportation throughout the community. The position operates mobile medical units, responds to emergency and non-emergency calls, assesses patients, delivers appropriate medical treatment, and transports patients safely to medical facilities.

The primary position is designed for a North Carolina Paramedic, with opportunities for qualified EMT and Advanced EMT candidates to be considered at the applicable salary grade.

Key Responsibilities

  • Respond to emergency and non-emergency medical calls as an ambulance attendant or driver.
  • Evaluate emergency scenes, identify hazards, determine mechanisms of injury, and request additional resources when needed.
  • Assess patients, determine the severity of injuries or illness, establish treatment priorities, and develop an appropriate care plan.
  • Provide Basic Life Support, including CPR, airway management, bleeding control, shock treatment, spinal and extremity immobilization, glucose monitoring, and vital-sign monitoring.
  • Provide Advanced Life Support within the authorized scope of practice, including advanced airway procedures, intubation, ECG monitoring, defibrillation, cardioversion, transcutaneous pacing, IV access, fluid therapy, medication administration, and other approved interventions.
  • Provide emergency childbirth and neonatal care when required.
  • Safely access, extricate, move, and prepare patients for transportation.
  • Maintain patient safety throughout emergency response, extrication, treatment, and transport.
  • Communicate clearly with supervisors, EMS personnel, 911 communications staff, receiving hospitals, patients, families, and bystanders.
  • Complete accurate electronic patient care reports documenting assessments, observations, treatments, and approved protocol deviations.
  • Follow applicable federal and state laws, local ordinances, EMS protocols, policies, and medical direction.
  • Use appropriate personal protective equipment when exposed to blood or other bodily fluids and follow infection-control procedures.
  • Respond to multiple-casualty incidents and request hazardous-material or other specialized assistance when necessary.
  • Inspect ambulances and emergency medical equipment daily.
  • Keep ambulances clean, disinfected, properly stocked, and ready for service.
  • Complete equipment logs, identify defects, and report maintenance or repair requirements.
  • Complete required continuing education and maintain all professional credentials and local practice privileges.
  • Participate in department committees, professional organizations, training programs, conferences, and other professional development activities.
  • Provide appropriate supervision of patient care delivered by other EMT personnel assigned to the unit during emergency calls.
  • Maintain EMS station cleanliness and perform minor facility maintenance.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Paramedic Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Two years of emergency response experience, including at least one year as an EMT with an Advanced Life Support emergency response agency, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Valid North Carolina Paramedic credential.
  • Valid North Carolina driver’s license.
  • Local EMS practice privileges at the appropriate credential level, or ability to obtain them within 90 days of a tentative job offer.

EMT & Advanced EMT Opportunities

Pitt County Government will also consider qualified candidates with:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • At least one year of emergency response experience, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Valid North Carolina EMT or Advanced EMT credential.
  • Valid North Carolina driver’s license.
  • Required local EMS practice privileges or the ability to obtain them within the required timeframe.

Qualified EMT and Advanced EMT applicants may be considered at the applicable salary grade while working toward Paramedic-level responsibilities.

Work Environment

This is a physically and mentally demanding prehospital EMS position. Employees may work in unpredictable environments and are exposed to emergency scenes, infectious diseases, hazardous conditions, varying weather, and situations requiring rapid clinical decision-making.
