Senior EMT / Field Training Officer (FTO)
Position Overview
River Road Rescue Squad, a New Jersey Department of Health licensed Basic Life Support (BLS) agency with over six decades of service, is seeking experienced Senior EMTs / Field Training Officers to strengthen our EMS team. As an organization operating within multiple EMS systems, we are committed to delivering high-quality, station-based BLS ambulance care while fostering professional development among new providers.
This position combines advanced field performance with hands-on mentorship. The selected candidate will support hybrid crews, guide newly hired EMTs, and help maintain exceptional clinical standards. Applicants should have substantial 9-1-1 field experience, demonstrated leadership abilities, and a genuine passion for advancing patient care and supporting fellow EMS professionals.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide high-level BLS ambulance services in accordance with state regulations and agency protocols.
- Serve as a mentor and trainer to EMTs, reinforcing best practices in triage, assessment, and emergency response procedures.
- Conduct thorough patient evaluations using strong knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology.
- Deliver expanded BLS interventions, including (but not limited to) aspirin, albuterol, CPAP, epinephrine, naloxone, glucometry, and PEEP as permitted by protocol.
- Utilize and troubleshoot medical equipment such as AEDs, suction units, and powered stretcher/load systems.
- Operate communication tools including two-way radios, mobile data terminals (MDTs), and electronic documentation tablets.
- Complete accurate and detailed electronic patient care reports using Zoll emsCharts, including CAD integration and hospital data exchange.
- Safely operate emergency vehicles under urgent conditions while complying with traffic and safety laws.
- Perform daily station and vehicle readiness duties, including equipment checks, cleaning, restocking, and related operational tasks.
Minimum Qualifications
- Positive attitude with a strong commitment to teaching and team development
- Minimum three (3) years of active 9-1-1 EMS experience
- At least three (3) years of leadership or mentorship experience
- Valid, non-probationary driver’s license
- Current NJ, PA, NY EMT certification or National Registry (NREMT)
- Current BLS CPR certification (AHA, ARC, or AHSI)
- CEVO or EVOC certification
Preferred Credentials
- BTLS, PHTLS, or ITLS
- PEARS or PEPP
Schedule
- 8-hour shifts: 7:00 AM–3:00 PM or 1:00 PM–9:00 PM
- 12-hour overnight shift: 7:00 PM–7:00 AM
- Block scheduling cycles: Jan–Apr, May–Aug, Sept–Dec
- Preference given to applicants able to commit to consistent recurring shifts
Compensation
- $27–$30 per hour (based on experience)
- Pay scale review scheduled for June 2026
- Employment types: Part-time or Per Diem
