Overview
The City of Atascadero is now accepting applications for the Seasonal Firefighter role for the 2026 fire season. This part-time, temporary position supports Engine Company staffing during peak summer operations. Employment duration will not exceed six months, depending on the length of the fire season. Work involves 56-hour shifts according to the department schedule, with the start date determined by the Fire Chief.

Duties and Responsibilities
Under general supervision, the Seasonal Firefighter will:

Suppress fires and respond to emergency medical and rescue situations as part of a fire crew

Assist with fire prevention programs, station and grounds maintenance, and general maintenance tasks including painting, cleaning, and light carpentry

Apply basic fire suppression techniques and principles under direction

Work collaboratively with colleagues while following verbal and written instructions
Required and Preferred Qualifications
Mandatory at Appointment:
-
Title 22 First Aid or higher certification
-
Completion of the Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT)
-
Hepatitis B vaccination and TB clearance (City can provide if needed)
Desired Qualifications:
-
Firefighter I certification
-
State Certified EMT-1
-
CPR certification
-
Haz-Mat Fro/Decon training or experience
-
Wildland and structural firefighting experience
-
Valid Class C California driver’s license with a clean DMV record
Other Requirements:
-
No visible tattoos while wearing department uniform; offensive content strictly prohibited

No tobacco use during employment with the Fire and Emergency Services Department
