Job Description
The City of Vacaville is accepting applications for the position of Firefighter/Paramedic I. At this time, the department anticipates filling up to eight (8) openings, with an academy class projected to begin in April 2026. This recruitment will also generate an eligibility list to address additional openings that may arise over the next year.
Firefighter/Paramedics with the City of Vacaville perform advanced emergency response duties that include fire suppression, emergency medical services, fire prevention and investigation, advanced life support (ALS) transport, and a wide range of activities focused on safeguarding lives and property. Paramedics serve as the lead medical provider at emergency scenes, deliver high-level patient care, and contribute to the upkeep of fire stations, apparatus, and equipment. Additional responsibilities typical of a professional Firefighter/Paramedic are also required.
Firefighter/Paramedic I is the entry-level position within the classification series. Employees who successfully complete the City’s 20-week internal training academy will advance to Firefighter/Paramedic II. Completion of Firefighter I training is no longer required prior to application; updated minimum qualifications apply.
Compensation

Firefighter/Paramedic I: $108,348.62 annually (during the in-house academy)

Firefighter/Paramedic II: $121,892.84 – $148,161.98 annually
Firefighter/Paramedics operate on a 48/96 shift schedule, averaging approximately 56 hours per week. Detailed benefit information and incentive pay options are available on the City’s official website.

Minimum & Preferred Qualifications
Education

High school diploma or equivalent required

Fire science coursework or California State Fire Marshal Firefighter I certification is preferred but not mandatory
Experience

No prior experience required

Preferred experience includes:

One (1) year as a paid Firefighter/Paramedic

Two (2) years as an emergency response ambulance paramedic

Licenses & Certifications

Valid California Paramedic License
