Organization: North Metro Fire Rescue District is seeking experienced, paramedic-certified firefighters to join our team as Lateral Firefighter Paramedics. Selected candidates will attend an abbreviated Fire Academy to meet district standards.

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants must:

  • Possess current CPAT certification by the final offer date

  • Hold a State of Colorado Paramedic license or National Registry Paramedic (NRP) certification

  • Meet the Lateral Paramedic definition: minimum of two years’ experience with a fire service agency or, for candidates with 10+ years of prior fire service experience, separation from service within the last three years may qualify, subject to Fire Chief discretion

  • Be employed in a fire agency similar or larger than North Metro Fire regarding population served, district size, and services provided

  • Demonstrate skills and knowledge consistent with a Firemedic II level


Position Overview

Under supervision, Firefighter Paramedics provide emergency and non-emergency services, including:

  • Fire suppression

  • Technical rescue and hazardous materials response

  • Advanced and Basic Life Support (ALS/BLS) medical care

  • Equipment, apparatus, and facility maintenance

  • Community outreach and public education

  • Ongoing professional training

Post-Academy Work Schedule: 56-hour rotating shifts, including 48-72 continuous hours

Fire Academy Schedule: Monday-Thursday, 6:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., additional hours as required


Key Responsibilities

Medical & EMS Duties:

  • Respond to emergency medical incidents and provide ALS/BLS care

  • Administer medication, CPR, advanced airway management, IV therapy, and patient stabilization

  • Operate medical equipment such as cardiac monitors and ventilators

  • Document patient care using electronic patient care reporting (ePCR) software

  • Maintain EMS supplies, equipment, and controlled substances in compliance with law

Firefighting & Rescue Duties:

  • Participate in fire suppression, rescue, and hazardous materials operations

  • Operate and maintain fire apparatus, vehicles, and tools

  • Attend ongoing training and drills, including Fire Academy coursework

  • Contribute to community outreach, education, and fire prevention programs


Required Education & Certifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent

  • Valid Colorado driver’s license and safe driving record

  • CPAT certification

  • Firefighter I and Hazardous Materials Operations certifications (or ability to obtain)

  • CPR certification

  • Maintain Paramedic certification

Probationary Requirements:

  • Completion of Fire Academy with ≥80% on written exams and passing practical exams

  • Demonstrate physical fitness and adaptability per NMFRD standards

  • Successfully complete background checks, reference checks, and pre-employment medical/drug screening

  • Ability to make rapid decisions under stress

  • Maintain positive working relationships with the public and coworkers

  • Perform physically demanding tasks, including lifting, climbing, and operating emergency equipment

  • Teach and mentor others as needed
