Firefighter / Basic Life Support (BLS) Seminole

Position Summary

This is a responsible, technical, and professional uniformed position representing the City of Seminole Fire Rescue Department. Employees in this role perform firefighting and Basic Life Support (BLS) duties in compliance with all County, State, and departmental rules, regulations, and protocols.

Work includes emergency medical response, fire suppression, rescue operations, and prevention activities. Duties are performed under established medical and administrative protocols and frequently occur in high-risk, physically demanding, and hazardous environments, requiring sound judgment, teamwork, and adherence to safety standards.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Firefighting and Emergency Response

  • Responds promptly to fire alarms, medical emergencies, rescues, hazardous conditions, and other emergency incidents

  • Performs firefighting operations, including:

    • Laying, connecting, and operating fire hoses and nozzles

    • Raising, climbing, and operating ladders

    • Using fire suppression equipment, hand tools, power tools, extrication tools, and appliances

    • Conducting forcible entry, rescue operations, property conservation, salvage, and overhaul

  • Operates engines, trucks, rescue units, squads, and associated equipment in accordance with departmental policies and safety procedures

  • Assists in the removal of victims from dangerous environments


Emergency Medical Services (Basic Life Support)

  • Provides first responder Basic Life Support at emergency scenes

  • Conducts initial patient and scene assessments

  • Assists with stabilization of critically ill or injured patients

  • Performs CPR, trauma care, and emergency medical treatment within scope of certification

  • Provides patient care until arrival of advanced medical personnel

  • Assists paramedics with Advanced Life Support (ALS) procedures while remaining within certified scope of practice

  • Completes accurate and timely medical and incident documentation


Risk Management and Safety

  • Applies established firefighter risk management principles to evaluate risk versus benefit during emergency operations

  • Takes appropriate action to minimize risk to personnel, victims, and property

  • Inspects and maintains personal protective equipment to ensure operational readiness and safety

  • Inspects assigned vehicles, equipment, and tools; restocks and re-supplies as necessary


Training, Readiness, and Team Participation

  • Maintains the physical fitness level required to meet the demands of firefighting and emergency response

  • Participates in all required training programs in firefighting, emergency medical care, and related disciplines

  • Attends crew meetings and shift briefings

  • Participates in shift change information exchange

  • Maintains familiarity with district maps, response areas, and automatic aid zones

  • Conducts company-level tactical surveys of buildings under 10,000 square feet and assists inspectors with larger structures as needed

  • Participates in the Department’s Physical Fitness Program as approved by the Fire Chief


Community and Public Engagement

  • Actively participates in public education and community outreach programs

  • Represents the Fire Rescue Department professionally at fire stations and off-site locations


Administrative and Operational Responsibilities

  • Assists with preparation and completion of reports related to emergency response, medical care, and vehicle operations

  • Maintains firefighting equipment, vehicles, fire stations, and associated facilities

  • Adheres to all departmental, divisional, and City personnel policies and procedures

  • Promotes effective communication with coworkers, supervisors, City staff, County agencies, and the public

  • Performs other job-related duties consistent with assigned division responsibilities


Professional Appearance Standards

Employees are expected to maintain a professional appearance that reflects positively on the City of Seminole. Standards include, but are not limited to:

  • Clean, neat, and professional attire appropriate to assigned duties

  • Good personal hygiene and grooming

  • Facial hair must be clean-shaven or well-groomed in accordance with departmental standards

  • Visible body piercings limited to two earrings per ear unless approved by the City Manager; other visible piercings are prohibited

  • Jewelry may be restricted for safety reasons

  • Hairstyles must be neat, professional, and natural in color

Tattoo Standards

  • Tattoos may not be visible above the collar of a crew-neck shirt

  • Hand tattoos may not extend past the first knuckle toward the wrist

  • Palm tattoos are prohibited

  • One discreet ring tattoo (single solid color, not exceeding 8 mm) is permitted on the ring finger only

  • Tattoos depicting offensive, unprofessional, violent, sexual, or discriminatory content are strictly prohibited

  • The Department Head or City Manager may require tattoos to be covered
