Job Description

Under the supervision of a Lieutenant, Firefighters carry out a wide range of public safety responsibilities focused on safeguarding lives and property. This role includes responding to fire emergencies, medical incidents, hazardous situations, and other calls for service, as well as participating in prevention efforts, community education, and routine station and equipment upkeep. Firefighters operate in both emergency and non-emergency settings and play a key hands-on role in delivering essential fire, EMS, and emergency management services to the community.

Core Responsibilities

Firefighters are expected to apply sound knowledge of fire dynamics, building construction, hazardous materials recognition, emergency medical protocols, fire codes, and departmental policies and procedures. Teamwork is essential, as members must function effectively within coordinated response operations during fire and medical incidents.

Strong communication skills are required to interact professionally with the public and fellow responders. The ability to remain calm, decisive, and effective in high-stress and challenging environments is critical to success in this role.

Skills and Abilities

This position requires practical proficiency in firefighting operations, rescue methods, and emergency medical care. Firefighters must be capable of performing search and rescue operations, forcible entry, ventilation, salvage, overhaul, and other essential support tasks during emergency responses. Awareness of hazardous materials and the ability to support all areas of emergency service delivery are also fundamental to the role.

Minimum and Preferred Qualifications

  • Valid Massachusetts driver’s license

  • Massachusetts Emergency Medical Technician certification (Paramedic preferred)

  • Graduation from the Massachusetts Firefighting Academy Recruit Training Program is preferred
