Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)

Position Summary

The Emergency Medical Technician provides safe and effective medical transportation services for both emergency and scheduled patient transfers. Working within the EMT scope of practice, this role delivers pre-hospital care, performs patient assessments, and ensures patients are transported safely to the appropriate healthcare facility or destination.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Respond quickly and safely to emergency and non-emergency medical transport requests dispatched by communications personnel.
  • Operate emergency vehicles according to Massachusetts state laws, department policies, and established safety procedures.
  • Maintain knowledge of local roads, geographic areas, and traffic conditions to support efficient response times.
  • Position ambulances safely at designated patient pickup and drop-off locations.
  • Complete accurate patient care reports, transport documentation, equipment checklists, and required administrative records.
  • Verify and collect necessary patient information, including insurance details from transferring facilities when required.
  • Ensure ambulances, medical supplies, and communication equipment remain clean, stocked, and ready for service.
  • Inspect equipment regularly, report damaged or malfunctioning items, and maintain operational readiness.
  • Provide BLS-level emergency medical care, including patient assessments, treatment interventions, and monitoring according to approved protocols.
  • Communicate clearly with hospitals, physicians, paramedics, emergency personnel, patients, and families.
  • Assist with patient care activities in the Emergency Department under physician supervision when assigned.
  • Perform only duties within the limits of EMT training, certification, and scope of practice.
  • Maintain professional relationships with coworkers, healthcare providers, public safety personnel, and community members.
  • Represent the ambulance department with professionalism, compassion, and respect.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Previous EMT experience (minimum one year preferred).
  • Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
  • Current EMT certification:
    • EMT-Basic (EMT-B)
    • EMT-Advanced (EMT-A)
    • or EMT-Paramedic (EMT-P)
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association or equivalent.
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification may be required based on role requirements.

Skills & Abilities

  • Ability to provide safe, effective emergency medical care with minimal supervision.
  • Strong understanding of EMS procedures, BLS protocols, and patient care standards.
  • Excellent communication skills with patients, families, healthcare teams, and emergency responders.
  • Ability to make sound decisions, remain calm under pressure, and demonstrate good judgment in critical situations.
  • Commitment to teamwork, patient safety, and high-quality emergency medical services.
