Job Overview
The City of Ontario is seeking motivated Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) to join the Ontario Fire Department as Ambulance Operators. This role offers an opportunity to support emergency medical operations and provide professional service to residents, visitors, and the local community.
The position is a limited-term assignment of up to three years. The recruitment may be used to establish an eligibility list for current and future full-time and part-time vacancies within this classification.
Successful candidates must be available to work a variety of schedules, including days, nights, weekends, holidays, 24-hour shifts, and scheduled or emergency overtime.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate City ambulances and other department vehicles during emergency and non-emergency calls.
- Safely transport patients to designated medical facilities in accordance with applicable laws, regulations, and department policies.
- Provide basic emergency medical care within the scope of an EMT certification.
- Assess and document vital signs, patient conditions, and circumstances surrounding emergencies.
- Assist paramedics with patient treatment, lifting, carrying, transferring, and transporting patients.
- Operate radios and communication equipment to coordinate with dispatch, hospitals, emergency personnel, and other agencies.
- Clean, disinfect, and decontaminate ambulances and medical equipment according to infection-control requirements.
- Complete accurate patient care, incident, billing, and operational reports.
- Inspect assigned ambulances and equipment daily to ensure operational readiness.
- Clean, restock, and maintain emergency vehicles and medical supplies.
- Monitor inventory and request replacement supplies or equipment when necessary.
- Maintain patient confidentiality and comply with HIPAA and applicable laws and protocols.
- Provide operational and logistical support to fire department personnel.
- Assist with fire station cleaning, organization, and general maintenance duties.
- Participate in department drills, training exercises, continuing education, and other assigned activities.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or recognized equivalent.
- Valid California EMT certification.
- Valid California Ambulance Driver Certificate issued by the California DMV.
- Valid Medical Examiner’s Certificate from an authorized medical examiner.
- Current BLS certification for Healthcare Providers from the American Heart Association or American Red Cross.
- Valid Class C California driver’s license.
- Acceptable driving record.
- Must be at least 18 years old.
Copies of all required certifications must be submitted with the application as specified by the City of Ontario.
Preferred Qualifications
- College-level coursework or training in fire technology, fire science, or a related field.
- Experience with a fire department as a volunteer, Fire Explorer, Fire Cadet, trainee, or reserve firefighter.
Work Schedule
Employees may be required to work:
- Day and night shifts
- Weekends and holidays
- 24-hour shifts
- Scheduled overtime
- Emergency overtime
Part-time/temporary positions may be scheduled for no more than 29 hours per week and are not eligible for the City’s health insurance or retirement plans.
Background & Selection Requirements
Appointments are subject to a comprehensive background investigation. The selection process may include a polygraph examination, post-offer medical examination, drug screening, driving and criminal record checks, employment verification, and review of other relevant background information.
The recruitment may be limited to the first 100 qualified applications received. Qualified candidates whose experience and qualifications best meet the City’s needs may be invited to continue in the selection process.
