Position Overview

The Firefighter/EMT or Firefighter/Paramedic is responsible for providing fire suppression, emergency medical care, fire prevention services, and community risk reduction during both emergency and routine operations. This dual-certified role functions as part of a coordinated response team handling fire incidents, medical emergencies, rescues, vehicle extrications, hazardous conditions, and other all-hazards responses. Personnel are expected to operate emergency vehicles and equipment safely, complete daily station duties, maintain apparatus readiness, and actively participate in ongoing training.

This position requires excellent communication skills, sound decision-making under stress, and the ability to work efficiently in demanding and fast-paced environments. The role is part-time and non-union. Dallas Fire & EMS operates a high-call-volume system, offering broad exposure to diverse fire and EMS incidents and significant hands-on experience.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Operate fire apparatus and emergency medical vehicles during emergency responses

  • Deploy hose lines, operate pumps, and utilize firefighting tools and equipment to control and extinguish fires

  • Deliver emergency medical treatment consistent with EMT or Paramedic certification level and transport patients to appropriate medical facilities

  • Assist with rescue operations, hazard mitigation, and other emergency response tasks as directed

  • Ensure apparatus, tools, and equipment are inspected daily and maintained in operational condition

  • Complete required documentation, reports, and operational records

  • Participate in scheduled drills, training programs, and continuing education related to fire and EMS operations

  • Perform routine station housekeeping and maintenance duties

  • Conduct hydrant inspections, clear obstructions, and maintain visibility markings

  • Assist with fire prevention activities, inspections, and public safety initiatives

  • Support training and mentorship of other firefighters when assigned

  • Perform duties that may involve exposure to bloodborne pathogens while following established safety protocols

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Ability to remain calm and exercise sound judgment during emergency situations

  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to interact professionally with the public

  • Capacity to work effectively as part of a team and independently when required

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must be at least 18 years of age

  • High school diploma or GED

  • Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record

  • ICS-200 and ICS-700 certifications

  • DPSST Firefighter I certification

  • Driver/Operator certification

  • Valid Oregon EMT, EMT-I, AEMT, or Paramedic license

  • Successful completion of an annual NFPA-compliant physical agility test

Preferred Qualifications

  • DPSST Firefighter II certification

  • DPSST Fire Instructor I certification

  • Apparatus Operator / Pumper certification

  • Aerial Apparatus Operator certification
