Position Overview

This role is responsible for responding to fires, medical emergencies, hazardous materials incidents, and other critical situations as they occur. The firefighter/EMT must maintain a thorough working knowledge of fire suppression systems, including hydrants, extinguishers, sprinkler networks, and smoke detection equipment. Proficiency in the use, inspection, and upkeep of standard and specialized firefighting tools is essential to ensuring emergency readiness and public safety.


Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Respond to fire suppression, emergency medical, and hazardous materials incidents under supervisory guidance

  • Conduct routine inspections, testing, and maintenance of hydrants, fire extinguishers, sprinkler systems, alarms, and other fire protection equipment

  • Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot a wide range of firefighting and rescue equipment, including specialized apparatus

  • Participate in ongoing training exercises and scheduled emergency response drills

  • Provide instruction or assistance in training programs for auxiliary personnel or support crews when assigned

  • Maintain current Ohio certification as EMT (Basic, Intermediate, or Paramedic) and Firefighter II

  • Serve as a public-facing communicator, including functioning as a 911 operator when required

  • Work rotating 12-hour shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays


Required Qualifications

  • Active State of Ohio certifications for Firefighter II and EMT-B, EMT-I, or Paramedic (must maintain certification level held at hire)

  • Minimum of three (3) years of documented experience as a firefighter and EMT, either career or volunteer, with verifiable emergency response activity

  • Successful completion of required agility and physical performance testing

  • Physical and mental fitness necessary to perform emergency response duties under high-stress conditions

  • Ability to wear Level A fully encapsulated suits, respiratory protection, and operate effectively in confined spaces

  • Valid driver’s license with the ability to safely operate emergency response vehicles

  • High school diploma or GED required

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Q security clearance


Preferred Knowledge and Experience

  • Familiarity with fixed industrial fire protection systems

  • Training or experience in hazardous materials response, structural collapse, trench rescue, and rope rescue operations


Physical and Environmental Requirements

This position demands the ability to perform physically intensive tasks under hazardous conditions. Requirements include, but are not limited to:

  • Lifting up to 100 pounds occasionally, 50 pounds frequently, and 20+ pounds continuously

  • Performing repetitive and non-repetitive motions such as climbing, crawling, kneeling, bending, stooping, pushing, pulling, reaching, balancing, and working at varying speeds

  • Full functional use of both hands and arms, including overhead reach

  • Normal color vision, depth perception, hearing, and vision consistent with Equipment Class I standards

  • Working in confined spaces, elevated locations, and environments that may be hot, cold, dusty, wet, or humid

  • Exposure to hazardous substances including chemicals, vapors, fumes, oils, greases, and radioactive materials

  • Wearing employer-provided personal protective equipment and respiratory protection as required
