Overview

Position Summary

The Field Supervisor reports directly to the Operations Supervisor and plays a leadership role in daily field operations. This position oversees supply management and handles designated special projects as assigned. The Field Supervisor also serves as second-in-command and must be prepared to assume the responsibilities of the Shift Supervisor when necessary.


Primary Responsibilities

  • Participate in mandatory management meetings.

  • Support the Training Department with orientation programs and continuing education initiatives as needed.

  • Delegate assignments, monitor performance for quality and accuracy, and provide feedback for improvement.

  • Work closely with the Communications team to ensure efficient deployment and use of resources.

  • Investigate, document, and report incidents or accidents according to company procedures.

  • Conduct inspections of personnel, stations, and EMS units to ensure compliance with organizational standards.

  • Coordinate with Maintenance to confirm vehicle safety and operational readiness.

  • Implement disciplinary measures in alignment with established EMS policies when required.

  • Determine appropriate patient destination and oversee safe transport, including securing patients and delivering continuous medical care en route.

  • Maintain knowledge of destination protocols and Paramedic Division guidelines.

  • Assist the Shift Supervisor with routine operational duties and step into a leadership role when needed.

Work Environment

Due to the nature of emergency medical services, this role involves exposure to adverse weather, hazardous environments, psychological stress, and potential contact with communicable diseases. Employees must be prepared for unpredictable schedules, high-pressure situations, and frequent interruptions. Extended shifts without regular breaks, sleep, or meals may occur depending on call volume. Occasional meetings outside standard work hours may also be required.

Qualifications

  • Current state certification as an EMT-Paramedic (EMT-P), or active enrollment in a Paramedic program

  • Completion of an Emergency Vehicle Operations Course (EVOC)

  • Basic proficiency with computers


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Understanding of pre-hospital emergency care practices and field response techniques

  • Familiarity with medical director-approved protocols and standing orders

  • Ability to interpret maps and navigate service areas effectively

  • Capacity to manage multiple urgent tasks simultaneously in high-pressure environments

  • Strong comprehension of medical terminology

  • Ability to prepare detailed reports and professional correspondence

  • Effective communication skills when addressing patient care issues, operational matters, or customer concerns

  • Competency in using electronic patient care reporting systems, email, and mobile data terminals

  • Professional demeanor that reflects positively on the organization and EMS team


Physical Requirements

  • Frequent use of hands for handling equipment and patient care tasks

  • Regular standing, walking, reaching, and verbal communication

  • Occasional climbing, balancing, or prolonged sitting

  • Ability to lift up to 180 pounds independently and up to 300 pounds with assistance

  • Visual capabilities including close vision, peripheral awareness, depth perception, color recognition, and focus adjustment
