Position Summary

The Medical Assistant supports Physicians, Physician Assistants, and Nurse Practitioners in delivering direct patient care. This role is responsible for both clinical and administrative duties that help maintain efficient daily clinic operations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Greet and room patients, collect medical histories, and confirm demographic and insurance information.
  • Record and document complete vital signs accurately.
  • Update electronic medical records (EMR) thoroughly, including medications, allergies, immunizations, and social history.
  • Assist providers during exams and minor procedures within scope of certification and state regulations.
  • Perform point-of-care testing as authorized.
  • Maintain and restock exam rooms and supply areas.
  • Clean and disinfect treatment rooms in accordance with safety and infection control standards.
  • Conduct pre-visit planning according to clinic protocols.
  • Monitor and log required compliance checks (refrigerator temps, emergency medications, oxygen, expired supplies, etc.).
  • Manage voicemails and EMR inbox messages throughout the workday.
  • Provide front-office support when needed, including check-in, check-out, scheduling, and phone coverage.
  • Follow HIPAA regulations and maintain strict patient confidentiality.
  • Participate in staff meetings and required training sessions.

Qualifications

Required:

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Completion of an accredited healthcare training program (Medical Assistant, CNA, LPN, EMT) or equivalent hands-on experience.
  • Active certifications per state guidelines.
  • Current BLS certification.
  • Strong computer proficiency; EMR experience preferred.
  • Prior Medical Assistant experience required.

Preferred:

  • National CMA certification.
  • 1–3 years of experience in family medicine or pediatrics.
  • Experience with Athenahealth practice management systems.

Work Environment & Physical Requirements

This role involves standing for extended periods, frequent use of hands and arms, occasional bending or kneeling, and lifting up to 25 pounds. Visual acuity for close and distance tasks is required. Employees may occasionally assist outside their primary duties based on clinic needs.
