Firefighter Intern (Part-Time)
Location: San Diego, CA 92113
Shift: Day Shift
Internship Duration: Up to 6 months
Schedule Requirement: 3 days per week, 8 hours per day (24 hours/week)

Overview
This part-time Firefighter Internship offers hands-on exposure to emergency response operations in an industrial environment. Interns will observe and assist with fire suppression and emergency medical responses while receiving close supervision to ensure all activities remain within defined training and safety limits. As skills develop, interns will participate more actively during drills and controlled training scenarios.
Key Responsibilities

Support emergency response operations under the supervision of the on-duty officer or incident commander

Assist with firefighting tasks such as hose deployment, ladder placement, and equipment setup

Provide basic first aid when required

Observe and assist with fire prevention activities and pre-incident inspections

Participate in scheduled drills, exercises, and training programs

Perform additional duties as assigned to support fire and safety operations
Required Skills & Qualifications

Currently enrolled in a Fire Science program or a recent graduate of a fire academy

Foundational understanding of firefighting principles, methods, and safety practices

Active EMT and CPR certifications

Valid CPAT or BIDDLE certification

Ability to troubleshoot routine technical issues

Strong verbal and written communication skills to effectively support team members and leadership
Physical & Work Environment Requirements

Work takes place in both office settings and outdoor shipyard environments
-
Ability to operate in confined spaces, at heights, and aboard vessels under construction or repair
-
Frequent climbing, crawling, bending, lifting, and ladder use required
-
Must be capable of lifting up to 100 pounds
-
Visual acuity must support close-range, distance, and peripheral observation

Regular exposure to noise, dust, fumes, smoke, and varying weather conditions

Must be able to perform all duties while wearing full personal protective equipment (PPE), including turnout gear and SCBA
-
Expect to spend up to 70% of working time outdoors, often in high-noise conditions

Support the effective implementation of workplace safety programs and fire management procedures

Assist in maintaining compliance with company safety standards and regulatory requirements
Compensation & Benefits

Pay Range: $37,400 β $56,800 annually (prorated for part-time internship)

Compensation is based on experience, education, and training
