Position Overview
This role is part of the Operations Division of the Mount Dora Fire Department and operates under the direction of a Lieutenant. Firefighters carry out their duties both independently and as members of a coordinated response team. Responsibilities include responding to fire emergencies, conducting rescue operations, providing first aid, performing ventilation and forcible entry, and assisting with salvage and overhaul activities after incidents. Personnel may also take part in fire prevention inspections and related safety practices.

To maintain operational readiness, firefighters regularly participate in classroom instruction and hands-on training exercises designed to strengthen their knowledge and skills. While many decisions are made with supervisory guidance, firefighters must also exercise sound judgment during emergency situations that directly impact public safety, property protection, and community well-being.

The work schedule follows a 24-hour shift followed by 48 hours off, with the possibility of overtime when operational needs require it. Employees must also be available for emergency call-backs when necessary.

Primary areas of responsibility include:

  1. Emergency Fire Suppression
  2. Non-Emergency Fire Service Activities
  3. Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Response
  4. Routine Work-Related and Operational Tasks

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required. Additional education related to fire science or emergency services is preferred.
  • Certification as Firefighter II issued by the State of Florida.
  • Current Florida EMT or Paramedic certification.
  • Completion of a 16-hour EVOC or CEVO (Emergency Vehicle Operations) course.
  • Valid CPR certification.
  • Possession of a valid Florida driver’s license.
  • Completion of required National Incident Management System (NIMS) training within six months after the probationary period.

A Paramedic Incentive is available upon successful completion of the Paramedic Provisional Program, providing additional compensation ranging from $4.00 per hour (approximately $11,648 annually).
