Position Overview:
The City of Bartow is seeking a dedicated Firefighter/EMT to deliver emergency services, including fire suppression, medical care, and public safety assistance. This role involves responding to emergencies under potentially hazardous conditions and requires physical endurance, strong problem-solving skills, and teamwork. The position operates under regular supervision with a commitment to community service and safety.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Respond to fire alarms and emergency calls; drive fire apparatus and assist in fire suppression, rescue operations, and salvage work.
  • Provide on-site basic and advanced medical care, including first aid and patient stabilization during transport.
  • Maintain detailed records of patient care and emergency responses.
  • Ensure readiness of equipment, fire engines, medical supplies, and fire station facilities.
  • Conduct routine inspections of fire and medical equipment; perform maintenance and cleaning of apparatus and grounds.
  • Assist with fire prevention inspections, pre-fire planning, and community safety education programs.
  • Install smoke detectors and participate in public safety demonstrations and fire station tours.
  • Attend drills, training programs, and continuing education courses to maintain and expand professional skills.
  • Perform other duties as required to support Fire Services operations.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • 0–3 years of related experience preferred.
  • Florida State Certified Firefighter and Emergency Medical Technician (EMT).
  • Valid Florida driver’s license.
  • Ability to work flexible shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude, physical stamina, and ability to lift up to 50 lbs routinely.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Understanding of fire suppression principles, hydraulics, and emergency medical care.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions effectively.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to work with colleagues and the public.
  • Capable of documenting and maintaining accurate reports.
  • Physical agility and endurance to perform duties under demanding conditions.

Work Environment & Physical Requirements:

  • Duties are performed indoors and outdoors in various weather conditions.
  • Exposure to hazards such as fire, smoke, chemicals, and emergency situations is expected.
  • Job involves climbing, bending, lifting, standing, walking, and other physically demanding activities.
  • Must be able to respond effectively in stressful emergency scenarios and maintain personal safety.
