Join Our Team as a Firefighter
The Hilton Head Island Fire Rescue, serving the Hilton Head Island, is seeking qualified Firefighter/EMTs and Firefighter/Paramedics to become part of our dedicated emergency response team. In this position, you will take part in a broad range of responsibilities including fire suppression, emergency medical response, community outreach, and other operational duties. The department manages roughly 9,700 service calls each year, with the majority—about 7,300 incidents—related to emergency medical services.
Key Responsibilities
- Respond to fires, medical emergencies, and other urgent incidents while performing firefighting and rescue operations.
- Serve in an assigned role on department apparatus and follow operational commands during emergency responses.
- Assist in creating and updating pre-incident plans for structures and facilities throughout the town.
- Provide patient care in accordance with EMS protocols appropriate to your certification level.
- Occasionally act as a Relief Operator when staffing needs require it.
- Participate in Special Operations Teams when assigned.
- Attend required training programs to maintain and improve professional skills and certifications.
- Prepare and submit incident reports and documentation accurately and on schedule.
- Conduct routine inspections and upkeep of firefighting equipment and vehicles.
- Maintain personal fitness through regular physical training necessary for emergency operations.
- Support station upkeep by assisting with facility and grounds maintenance to ensure a safe and orderly environment.
Minimum Qualifications
- Certification as Firefighter I & II through IFSAC or ProBoard.
- Current National Registry EMT certification.
- High school diploma or GED equivalent.
- Minimum age of 18 years at the time of employment.
- Ability to meet physical and medical standards as confirmed by a professional evaluation.
- Valid driver’s license.

Salary Ranges
- Firefighter/EMT: Starting at $56,992, with potential earnings up to $69,285.
- Firefighter/Paramedic: Starting at $66,111, with potential earnings up to $80,370.
Sign-On Incentives
- Certified Firefighters: $2,500
- EMTs: $2,500
- Paramedics: $10,000
(Applicable to candidates whose certifications are transferable or eligible for reciprocity.)
