Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)

Position Overview

The Emergency Medical Technician provides frontline medical care in both emergency response and interfacility transport environments. This role functions independently and in coordination with a partner to deliver safe, timely, and patient-focused treatment within the EMT scope of practice. The EMT is also responsible for maintaining readiness of vehicles, equipment, and assigned work areas while upholding high standards of professionalism and patient satisfaction.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver emergency medical care with composure, compassion, and professionalism.
  • Perform clinical interventions permitted within scope, which may include airway management, IV/IO access, medication administration, cardiac monitoring (4-Lead and 12-Lead ECG), defibrillation, pacing, and other advanced procedures as authorized.
  • Coordinate effectively with a partner to ensure seamless patient care and operational efficiency.
  • Manage scenes involving multiple patients while maintaining organization and situational awareness.
  • Complete accurate and timely electronic patient care documentation.
  • Participate in daily shift duties, equipment checks, and ambulance readiness.
  • Review patient reports for completeness and quality assurance.
  • Foster strong working relationships with EMS agencies, hospital staff, physicians, and community partners.

Qualifications

Education & Licensure

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Current Kansas EMT certification
  • BLS, ACLS, and PALS certification within 3 months of hire
  • Completion of NIMS/ICS 100, 200, 700, and 800
  • Valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record and insurability

Work Environment & Physical Requirements

This position may involve exposure to infectious diseases, environmental hazards, temperature extremes, and loud noise. Appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) must be worn as required.

The role requires frequent physical activity including lifting more than 50 pounds, bending, stooping, climbing, and prolonged standing or walking.

  • Sitting: approximately 30%
  • Standing/Walking: approximately 70%
