Role Overview

The Non-Emergency Transport EMT provides dependable, patient-focused medical support and transportation for individuals requiring scheduled or non-urgent transfers. Assignments may include hospital discharges, dialysis appointments, interfacility transfers, and residential transports.

This role operates in accordance with South Carolina EMT regulations, established medical protocols, and organizational policies, ensuring safe transport and quality patient care at all times.


Core Duties

Patient Transportation & Assistance

  • Operate ambulance units safely while complying with company standards and state traffic laws.

  • Transport patients between medical facilities, residences, rehabilitation centers, dialysis clinics, and other approved destinations.

  • Assist patients with mobility using stretchers, wheelchairs, or assisted ambulation as appropriate.

Patient Monitoring & Basic Medical Care

  • Conduct initial patient evaluations, including vital signs and relevant health information.

  • Provide basic life support interventions within EMT scope if a patient’s condition changes during transport.

  • Observe patient condition throughout transport and report concerns to medical personnel or receiving facilities.

Reporting & Coordination

  • Accurately complete patient care documentation, transport records, and required logs.

  • Maintain professional communication with dispatch, healthcare providers, patients, and family members.

  • Ensure documentation supports regulatory compliance and billing requirements.

Vehicle Readiness & Compliance

  • Perform routine inspections of vehicles, medical equipment, and supplies before and after shifts.

  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of the ambulance and patient care areas.

  • Follow infection control standards, including proper use of PPE and thorough vehicle sanitation.

  • Comply with HIPAA guidelines and all applicable local, state, and federal regulations.

Professional Conduct & Customer Care

  • Deliver respectful, compassionate service to patients and caregivers.

  • Maintain a professional appearance and demeanor at all times.

  • Manage challenging situations calmly while prioritizing patient comfort and safety.


Minimum Qualifications

Required:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.

  • Active South Carolina EMT certification or eligibility for certification.

  • Current CPR/BLS credentials (AHA or equivalent).

  • Valid South Carolina driver’s license with a clean driving history.

  • Successful completion of background screening and drug testing.

  • Physical ability to safely lift, move, and assist patients and equipment.

Preferred:

  • Prior EMS, non-emergency transport, or healthcare experience.

  • EVOC/CEVO or comparable vehicle operations training.

  • Knowledge of local medical facilities and service routes.


Physical & Environmental Demands

  • Regular lifting, bending, and patient transfers.

  • Working indoors and outdoors in varied weather conditions.

  • Extended periods of driving and sustained alertness.

  • Potential exposure to bodily fluids and medical hazards, with protective equipment provided.
