Medical Assistant
Job Summary
The Medical Assistant supports healthcare providers with patient examinations, treatments, diagnostic testing, clinical documentation, and daily clinic operations. This safety-sensitive position requires strong attention to detail, professionalism, confidentiality, and the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced healthcare environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Welcome patients and help maintain an efficient patient flow.
- Obtain medical histories, triage patients, record vital signs, and update charts.
- Prepare patients, examination rooms, instruments, and equipment for provider visits.
- Assist providers with examinations and medical procedures.
- Administer medications and injections only as ordered by the provider.
- Perform wound care, dressing changes, and suture or staple removal.
- Draw blood and collect, label, and process laboratory specimens.
- Perform CLIA-waived laboratory testing.
- Conduct diagnostic testing such as ECGs, eye and ear testing, pulse oximetry, peak flow testing, and related procedures.
- Perform occupational medicine protocols according to established guidelines.
- Assist with basic X-rays or prepare equipment for the Radiology Technician when applicable.
- Accurately document medical services, test results, medications, and supplies.
- Schedule follow-up appointments, referrals, testing, and patient callbacks.
- Maintain medical equipment and perform required quality checks.
- Monitor medical supply and pharmaceutical inventory and place orders when needed.
- Assist with patient registration and front-office duties.
- Escort or transport patients by wheelchair or stretcher as required.
- Maintain patient confidentiality and follow applicable safety and clinical procedures.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Graduation from an accredited Medical Assistant program preferred.
- Medical Assistant course completion certification preferred.
- Current BLS certification required and must be maintained.
- Two years of Medical Assistant experience preferred.
- Basic computer skills.
- Ability to read and write medical terminology accurately.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Excellent attention to detail.
- Ability to work all shifts.
- Ability to respond appropriately during emergency or crisis situations.
Physical & Working Requirements
The position involves frequent sitting, standing, walking, and interaction with patients. Employees may occasionally need to bend, squat, kneel, climb, twist, lift, carry, push equipment, or travel.
The role may require transporting patients and lifting approximately 15–20 pounds, with occasional heavier patient or equipment handling. Employees may be exposed to infectious diseases and must use appropriate protective equipment when required.
Work Environment
The Medical Assistant works in a fast-paced clinical setting with varying patient needs, interruptions, and potentially unpredictable situations. The position may involve irregular hours and requires flexibility, professionalism, and the ability to remain calm under pressure.
