Job Description
The Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) / Paramedic at Houston Methodist plays an essential role in supporting patient care for individuals of all ages, working closely with nurses and healthcare providers. This position assists with clinical tasks such as performing electrocardiograms (EKGs), collecting laboratory samples, and helping patients with daily care needs within defined responsibilities.
Under the supervision of licensed staff, the EMT/Paramedic ensures effective communication, carries out assigned duties, and performs routine patient rounds to monitor conditions and respond to needs. Observations, concerns, and changes in patient status are documented and promptly reported according to established procedures. The role emphasizes a patient- and family-focused approach aligned with Houston Methodist service standards.
Schedule:
Two 12-hour shifts on Saturdays and Sundays (8:00 AM β 8:30 PM)

Qualifications
Education
- High school diploma or equivalent (GED or similar accepted)
- Completion of an EMT-Advanced or Paramedic program, current Paramedic licensure, or active enrollment in a Paramedic training program with EMT-Advanced standing
Experience
- Minimum of six months of experience in either a pre-hospital or hospital setting as an EMT or Paramedic
Licenses & Certifications
Candidates must hold one of the following:
- Licensed Paramedic (state license)
- EMT-Advanced certification
- EMT-Paramedic certification
Additionally required:
- Basic Life Support (BLS) β American Heart Association
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) β American Heart Association
- Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) β within 3 months of hire
- Nonviolent Crisis Intervention (CPI) β within 3 months of hire
Knowledge & Skills
- Ability to safely perform assigned duties based on ongoing competency evaluations
- Strong communication skills in English (verbal and written)
- Capable of interacting professionally with patients, families, and healthcare teams
- Effective decision-making and critical thinking abilities
- Strong organizational and time management skills
- Ability to multitask and adapt in a fast-paced clinical environment
- Proficiency with electronic health records (such as Epic) and Microsoft Office tools
- Basic EKG interpretation skills
- Understanding of EMTALA regulations
Key Responsibilities
Team & Collaboration
- Work cooperatively with healthcare staff to support patient care and unit operations
- Assist colleagues when needed and contribute to a positive work environment
- Help orient and guide new team members and support staff
- Communicate clearly and professionally with all members of the care team
Patient Care & Service
- Provide direct patient care under nursing supervision, including vital signs, EKGs, specimen collection, and basic procedures
- Assist with tasks such as IV placement, CPR, splinting, immobilization, and patient transport when trained and authorized
- Conduct regular patient rounds to assess needs and identify any changes in condition
- Respond promptly to patient requests and escalate concerns appropriately
- Accurately document all care activities according to policy
Safety & Quality
- Perform rapid patient assessments and identify signs of deterioration or risk
- Report critical findings to appropriate medical staff without delay
- Maintain patient privacy and adhere to safety protocols
- Participate in reporting incidents and supporting quality improvement initiatives
- Help prevent complications such as falls, infections, and pressure injuries
Operations & Efficiency
- Use supplies responsibly and assist with inventory management
- Maintain an organized and well-stocked clinical environment
- Support staffing needs across departments when required
- Manage time effectively to meet workload demands

Additional Information
Dress Code: Scrubs required (department-approved attire)
