Position: Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)
Department: Safety
Reports To: Manager of Medical Response Programs
Employment Type: Part-Time
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
Position Summary
The Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) is responsible for delivering immediate care and first aid services to Zoo Atlanta staff, visitors, and contractors. This includes responding to minor injuries, medical emergencies, and sudden illnesses within the EMT’s scope of practice. The role reports directly to the Manager of Medical Response Programs and plays a key part in maintaining a safe environment across the zoo.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide first aid and emergency care for incidents such as injuries, respiratory distress, animal-related incidents, and sudden illnesses
- Assist guests and staff with directions, information, and general support in a professional and courteous manner
- Maintain continuous communication with dispatch via radio to ensure timely response to incidents
- Accurately document all patient interactions, treatments, and incident details
- Keep work areas clean and follow established sanitation and infection control procedures
- Support routine checks and maintenance of medical supplies, AEDs, and first aid equipment
- Assist with safety initiatives and projects led by the Occupational Health and Safety team
- Work flexible hours, including weekends and holidays, as needed
- Uphold Zoo Atlanta’s mission, vision, and values in all interactions
- Perform additional duties or special assignments as directed by management
Qualifications
Experience & Knowledge
- Minimum of one year of experience in emergency medical services preferred
- Understanding of basic clinical procedures, anatomy, and physiology
Skills & Abilities
- Ability to remain calm and effective in emergency situations
- Strong organizational and communication skills (both written and verbal)
- Basic computer proficiency for documentation and reporting
- Ability to work collaboratively with individuals across all levels of the organization
- Bilingual skills are a plus
Education
- High school diploma or equivalent required
Certifications & Licenses
- Current certification as EMT, AEMT, or Paramedic (must be maintained)
- Certification (or willingness to obtain) as a First Aid/CPR/AED Instructor through the American Red Cross
- Valid Georgia driver’s license required
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand or sit for extended periods
- Capability to lift up to 50 pounds
Work Environment
- Combination of indoor office settings and outdoor environments
- Must be comfortable working in varying weather conditions
