The Emergency Department Tech (EMT-Basic) supports physicians and registered nurses by providing direct patient care in the emergency department, following established clinical protocols and the scope of practice for New Mexico EMT-Basic certification.

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED

  • Current Healthcare Provider BLS certification

  • Active New Mexico EMT-Basic license or National Registry EMT-Basic certification


Preferred Experience

  • Previous healthcare, clinical, or volunteer experience in a medical setting


Key Responsibilities

  • Carry out physician and RN orders under clinical supervision within EMT-B scope of practice

  • Assist with procedures such as splinting, wound care, and preparation for suturing

  • Perform diagnostic tasks including 12-lead EKGs and point-of-care testing (glucose, urine, strep, pregnancy, blood alcohol, and iStat testing)

  • Assist with venipuncture and IV insertion following training completion

  • Support emergency interventions such as CPR, BVM ventilation, and chest compressions

  • Set up sterile procedure trays, including suture and central line kits

  • Prepare and operate medical equipment such as suction systems, rapid infusers, and chest drainage devices

  • Provide patient support services, including crutch training and mobility assistance

  • Participate in trauma response and resuscitation teams

  • Respond to inpatient emergencies as part of the ED code team

  • Perform rapid patient assessments and assist with triage processes under RN supervision

  • Obtain and document vital signs, including repeat monitoring for waiting patients

  • Receive and communicate EMS reports and escalate critical conditions to clinical staff

  • Assist with patient transport within the facility, including radiology, inpatient units, and helipad transfers

  • Act as a patient sitter or observer for at-risk individuals when assigned

  • Support infection control practices and maintain a clean, safe clinical environment

  • Perform equipment checks, stocking, and daily operational readiness tasks

  • Document all patient care activities accurately in medical records

  • Assist with procedural sedation and other emergency interventions as directed

  • Support law enforcement with authorized legal blood alcohol collections

  • Remove NG tubes and perform suture removal (for patients over 16) under supervision

  • Act as unit support staff when required and assist with administrative tasks


Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds

  • Must be able to stand, walk, and move continuously throughout shifts

  • Ability to perform hands-on clinical procedures safely and effectively

  • Competency in using computers for clinical documentation

  • Must pass required color vision screening for clinical compliance
