Position: Advanced Emergency Medical Technician (AEMT)
Department: Emergency Medical Services
Location: St. Lawrence Health Systems
Schedule: Per Diem, 12-hour shifts; includes variable days, weekends, and holidays

Overview:
The Advanced Emergency Medical Technician (AEMT) delivers urgent basic and advanced medical care while ensuring safe transport of patients during emergencies. This role is vital for stabilizing patients and coordinating care from the scene to medical facilities.

Key Responsibilities:

• Respond promptly to emergency calls, assess patient conditions, and determine appropriate medical interventions.

• Transport patients safely while monitoring their health and providing necessary treatment during transit.

• Perform life-saving measures, including CPR, airway management, bleeding control, and other interventions within the NYS AEMT scope of practice.

• Operate essential medical equipment such as defibrillators, oxygen systems, and monitoring devices.

• Collaborate with paramedics, hospital personnel, firefighters, and law enforcement to provide seamless patient care.

• Maintain detailed and accurate patient care documentation, including assessments, treatments, and responses.

• Ensure emergency vehicles and medical equipment are clean, stocked, and ready for use.

• Follow written and verbal instructions accurately, including medical calculations as needed.

• Lift and transport patients safely, often in challenging environments or extreme conditions.

• Participate in ongoing training to stay current with medical protocols and emergency care best practices.

• Maintain composure, professionalism, and focus in high-pressure situations.

Work Environment & Physical Demands:

• Perform duties in unpredictable and potentially hazardous environments, both indoors and outdoors.

• Physically lift and move patients and equipment (up to 250 lbs with assistance).

• Walk, kneel, crawl, and navigate uneven terrain or emergency conditions.

• Operate and carry medical equipment, including ALS bags and monitoring devices.

• Maintain focus and remain calm in emotionally charged or high-stress emergencies.

Required Qualifications:

• NYS Advanced EMT (AEMT) certification

• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification at hire; must obtain AHA BLS within 3 months if not already certified

• Valid driver’s license

• Ability to perform heavy work: exerting 50–100 lbs occasionally, 25–50 lbs frequently, 10–20 lbs constantly; includes continuous walking, standing, or squatting

Preferred Qualifications:

• Emergency Vehicle Operator Course (EVOC) or equivalent

• In-depth knowledge of emergency medical procedures and patient care techniques

Education & Certifications:

• NYS AEMT license required

• Continuing education as specified by department programs

Compensation:

• Base pay: $23.00 – $28.00 per hour (may vary based on experience, qualifications, and contracts)
