Paramedic II – Life Flight Advanced Life Support

Position Overview
The Paramedic II serves as a critical member of the interdisciplinary healthcare team, delivering direct patient care across a variety of practice settings and patient populations. The role operates within the scope of practice defined by the North Carolina Medical Board and under the oversight of the assigned Medical Director. This position is focused on advanced life support services, both in hospital and transport environments.


Key Responsibilities

  • Provide advanced life support and direct patient care in accordance with state regulations and medical direction

  • Support clinical staff with patient assessment, treatment, and care plans; obtain patient history and perform physical examinations

  • Perform delegated technical procedures and ensure accurate monitoring of patient status

  • Maintain detailed patient records in electronic health systems, documenting interventions, observations, and patient responses

  • Ensure all medical documentation is complete, precise, and compliant for billing and regulatory requirements

  • Communicate effectively with healthcare team members to promote coordinated care

  • Operate, maintain, and monitor medical and mechanical equipment in both hospital and transport settings

  • Restock supplies, verify equipment readiness, and perform basic maintenance on vehicles and medical units

  • Maintain a safe, therapeutic environment for patients, visitors, and staff; follow infection control procedures and proper PPE usage

  • Serve as a preceptor to support the development of staff and clinical learners

  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives, evidence-based practice, and performance evaluations

  • Conduct vehicle inspections, complete road tests, and perform minor repairs or maintenance as needed

  • Assist with patient loading, unloading, and transport, including safe operation of equipment

  • Provide patient care during ALS I, ALS II, or BLS transports within authorized scope

  • Support continuing education programs and public outreach events as assigned

  • Provide coverage across multiple bases and assist hospital units as needed


Education & Experience

  • High School Diploma required; Associate’s degree preferred

  • Minimum of one year ALS paramedic experience required; two to three years of prehospital experience with moderate call volume preferred (>15,000 calls/year 911 agency)


Licensure & Certification

  • Active North Carolina Paramedic certification or eligibility to obtain

  • BLS, ACLS, PALS required

  • Trauma certification (PHTLS, BTLS, or ITLS) preferred

  • NRP certification within 6 months of hire

  • North Carolina Emergency Vehicle Operator Certification (EVOC) or equivalent within 6 months

  • Valid Class C driver’s license with clean three-year driving history


Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Comprehensive understanding of Paramedic scope of practice

  • Ability to assess and manage acute and chronic patient conditions

  • Strong critical thinking, decision-making, and prioritization skills

  • Proficient in documentation, electronic medical records, and patient care reporting

  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills with patients, families, and healthcare professionals

  • Skilled in operating medical equipment, vehicles, and performing advanced procedures safely

  • Able to withstand prolonged standing, walking, lifting (up to 75 lbs), bending, and other physical demands

  • Maintains situational awareness and responds quickly to patient or unit changes

  • Committed to professional development and continuing education


Physical Requirements

  • Must have intact vision, hearing, touch, and dexterity

  • Capable of performing physically demanding tasks including patient handling, equipment management, and vehicle operations

  • Ability to maintain focus and organization in dynamic, high-stress environments
