Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) – Correctional Facility

Position Overview

The EMT provides emergency care, clinical support, and medication management within a correctional facility. Working under nursing supervision and physician standing orders, the EMT operates within the supplemental EMS scope authorized by New Mexico law and facility policies.


Key Responsibilities

  • Respond to medical emergencies, stabilizing patients until advanced care is available.

  • Conduct intake medical screenings to identify urgent needs and ensure medication continuity.

  • Administer routine, pre-packaged medications to stable patients according to eMAR and physician orders.

  • Monitor chronic health conditions by performing blood pressure checks, blood glucose tests, and pulse oximetry.

  • Deliver physician-approved nebulizer treatments and metered-dose inhalers (MDIs).

  • Support nursing staff during sick calls, medication rounds, and daily clinical tasks.

  • Assist with off-site patient transfers, ensuring safety and monitoring during transport.

  • Accurately document all patient care and medication administration in the Patient Health Record.

  • Adhere to infection control, safety protocols, and facility documentation standards.


Qualifications

  • Active EMT-Basic or EMT-Intermediate certification in New Mexico.

  • Current CPR/BLS certification.

  • Experience in emergency medical services or correctional healthcare is preferred.
