Position Overview

The Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) is responsible for delivering basic life support (BLS) care and providing safe, efficient patient transport for both emergency and non-emergency situations. This role operates under Minnesota EMT scope of practice, established protocols, and medical direction to ensure high-quality pre-hospital and interfacility care.

The EMT will respond to ambulance calls, assist with patient assessment and stabilization, and transport patients to appropriate healthcare facilities. This position also involves collaboration with fellow EMS professionals, hospital personnel, and public safety agencies to ensure coordinated and compassionate care delivery.

This is an on-call role scheduled for weekday shifts, weekend rotations, and select holidays, with compensation provided for standby duty and holiday coverage.


Key Responsibilities

  • Respond to emergency and non-emergency transport requests and provide BLS-level care within scope of practice

  • Conduct patient assessments, monitor vital signs, and deliver appropriate pre-hospital interventions

  • Operate ambulance vehicles safely in compliance with state regulations and organizational policies

  • Assist with patient lifting, movement, and transport using proper safety techniques and equipment

  • Support advanced providers (Paramedics, RNs, or other licensed clinicians) during interfacility transfers

  • Accurately complete patient care reports and required documentation in a timely manner

  • Ensure ambulance readiness by cleaning, restocking supplies, and checking equipment functionality

  • Communicate effectively with dispatch, hospital staff, patients, families, and emergency responders

  • Coordinate with fire, law enforcement, and other agencies during emergency operations

  • Participate in department meetings, training sessions, and continuing education activities

  • Contribute to quality improvement initiatives and service development efforts

  • Maintain professionalism, teamwork, and compliance with EMS protocols and organizational standards

  • Perform additional duties as assigned


Qualifications

Required:

  • Current Minnesota EMT certification

  • National Registry EMT certification (or eligibility to obtain/maintain)

  • Valid Minnesota driver’s license with an acceptable driving record

  • Current BLS certification (AHA or equivalent)

  • Minimum age of 18 years

Preferred:

  • Prior experience in EMS or healthcare settings

  • Experience with rural EMS systems or interfacility transport operations


Work Schedule & On-Call Structure

  • Scheduled on-call duty including weekday shifts

  • Weekend rotation coverage and periodic holiday assignments

  • Participation in department meetings as required

  • Flexibility to respond to variable call volumes and transfer demands
