Job Summary

The Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) is responsible for responding to both emergency and non-emergency medical transport requests. This role involves providing pre-hospital care within the EMT scope of practice and ensuring patients are safely and efficiently transported to the appropriate healthcare facility or residence.


Key Responsibilities

  • Respond quickly and safely to emergency and non-emergency dispatch calls
  • Operate emergency vehicles in compliance with Massachusetts traffic and EMS regulations
  • Maintain knowledge of local roadways, traffic conditions, and optimal travel routes
  • Park and position vehicles safely at designated pickup and drop-off locations
  • Complete accurate patient care reports and required documentation in a timely manner
  • Conduct daily equipment and vehicle safety checks at the start of each shift
  • Restock medical supplies and equipment promptly after each transport
  • Maintain cleanliness and operational readiness of ambulances and medical gear
  • Report any equipment damage, safety concerns, or operational issues immediately
  • Deliver Basic Life Support (BLS) care and perform patient assessments in accordance with protocols
  • Provide clear, concise radio communication and patient status updates
  • Assist hospital emergency department staff when required and within scope of training
  • Support paramedics and healthcare professionals in delivering patient-centered care
  • Maintain professionalism and positive communication with patients, families, and healthcare teams

Qualifications & Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Prior EMT experience preferred (1 year or more)
  • Valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record
  • Certification as EMT-Basic, EMT-Advanced, or EMT-Paramedic required
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification (AHA required)
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) preferred depending on role level
  • Strong understanding of EMS protocols and pre-hospital care procedures
  • Ability to work independently and make sound decisions under pressure
  • Strong communication, teamwork, and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to interact professionally with patients, hospital staff, and emergency responders
