Howard University Hospital is currently seeking a motivated Emergency Department Technician to join the Emergency Department team and contribute to its long-standing commitment to clinical excellence.

Key Responsibilities

Working under the supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN), the Emergency Department Technician assists with clinical and technical tasks that support effective patient care. Responsibilities include:

  • Performing technical procedures such as IV line insertion, heparin locks, EKGs, and telemetry monitoring as directed.

  • Supporting patient care activities including hygiene assistance, mobility support, transfers, and specialized treatments such as catheter care, enemas, oral suctioning, ostomy care, sterile dressing changes, and bed preparation.

  • Routinely checking on patients to address needs promptly and assisting with ambulation and range-of-motion exercises.

  • Monitoring and recording vital signs, as well as documenting patient intake and output.

  • Following infection prevention protocols and using appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) while maintaining a clean patient environment.

  • Collecting and labeling specimens, including blood samples through venipuncture, and ensuring proper documentation for lab requests.

  • Gathering patient information for nursing assessments and reporting any concerning changes in condition to nursing staff.

  • Assisting with equipment setup, running departmental errands, and completing other related tasks as required.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED required.

  • Completion of a healthcare training program beyond high school (such as CNA, EMT, or Patient Care Technician training) preferred.

  • Candidates who have completed a Fundamentals of Nursing course with clinical training in an LPN or RN program may also qualify.

  • International nursing graduates with credential evaluations recognized by the DC Board of Nursing may be considered.

  • Phlebotomy training is preferred.

  • At least one year of practical experience as a Patient Care Technician, EMT, or Paramedic is preferred.

Alternative experience may include a minimum of 1,000 hours of recent clinical work (within the past 36 months) as a:

  • Navy or Air Force medical technician corpsman

  • Air Force independent duty medical technician

  • Army healthcare specialist

  • Emergency Medical Technician

  • Paramedic

Nursing students who have completed at least one year of clinical rotations are also encouraged to apply.

Certifications

  • National Patient Care Technician Certification (DC-approved) or NREMT certification preferred.

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association is required.

  • Employment Type: Full-Time (0.9 FTE)

  • Shift: Day Shift (Monday–Friday and every other weekend, 7:30 AM – 8:00 PM)

  • Pay Range: $17.50 – $27.84 per hour (based on experience and internal equity)
