Patient Care Associate – Methodist Le Bonheur Health (MLH)

Role Overview

The Patient Care Associate provides hands-on support to licensed nursing staff and physicians, assisting with patient care and related non-clinical duties. This role embodies the MLH Mission, Vision, and Values and contributes to a culture of excellence, compassion, and service.


Key Responsibilities

  • Assist with patient care under the guidance of the Charge/Registered Nurse.

  • Take and reassess vital signs, including pulse oximetry, and report results to nursing staff.

  • Properly position patients for examinations and procedures; assist with safe transport and ensure correct patient identification.

  • Perform phlebotomy according to safety protocols and clinical standards.

  • After completing CES-provided orthopedic training, assist with splints, casts, and orthopedic care as directed by providers.

  • Conduct EKGs and other clinical procedures following policy and proper documentation.

  • Demonstrate professionalism and teamwork in all interactions with the care team.

  • Complete all mandatory and unit-specific competency requirements.

  • Carry out additional duties as assigned to support patient care.


Education & Certification Requirements

Required:

  • Technical degree or diploma in Emergency Medical Technology (EMT)

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification – American Heart Association

  • EMT certification – National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians

Preferred:

  • Advanced EMT (AEMT) or Paramedic certification – National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians


Experience

  • Preferred: 0–1 year of healthcare experience; new graduates are welcome.

  • Strong verbal communication skills with patients, families, and healthcare team members

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and comply with HIPAA regulations

  • Calmness under stressful situations, including emergencies or patient loss

  • Competence with clinical equipment and adherence to safety procedures


Physical Requirements

  • Medium work: occasional lifting up to 50 lbs., frequent lifting up to 25 lbs.

  • Ability to stand, walk, climb, kneel, stoop, and perform repetitive motions

  • Close visual acuity, including depth perception and color recognition

  • Frequent patient contact, including exposure to body fluids and hazardous materials

  • Ability to respond quickly in emergency situations
