Overview

This Advanced Emergency Medical Technician (AEMT) position is assigned to the Nashville Fire Department and provides emergency medical care to injured and critically ill patients in the field and during transport to medical facilities. The AEMT responds to emergency incidents, assesses patient condition, establishes treatment priorities per state regulations, administers advanced pre-hospital care, operates ambulance equipment, documents patient information and vital signs, communicates with hospital/on-line medical control, and maintains medical supplies and vehicle readiness. The role requires participation in ongoing training and may serve in a lead/senior capacity.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • State of Tennessee license as an Advanced Emergency Medical Technician (AEMT).
  • Must meet NFPA medical standards.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age prior to employment.
  • Valid driver’s license.
    Failure to maintain a valid AEMT license will result in termination. Candidates with foreign accreditations are encouraged to apply.

Preferred Knowledge & Skills

  • Thorough knowledge of Tennessee Department of Health EMS rules and regulations, advanced medical procedures, emergency treatment techniques, specialized ambulance equipment, and local geography.
  • Skill in operating emergency vehicles and medical/rescue equipment, using two-way radios, diagnosing injuries, applying appropriate treatment, and making rapid, life-critical decisions.
