Overview:
The Department of Emergency Medical Services (DEMS) is seeking a skilled Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) to provide prehospital care and safe patient transport within our service area and affiliated hospitals. The EMT may also assist with inter-facility transfers and provide mutual aid support to neighboring EMS services as needed.
EMTs deliver care for patients of all ages—from neonates to geriatrics—applying knowledge of human growth and development, age-specific assessment techniques, and appropriate medical interventions based on individual patient needs.
Qualifications:
Education & Experience:

High School Diploma or GED required.

Prior EMT or healthcare experience preferred.
Certification/Licensure:
-
Certified EMT in accordance with the New Jersey State Department of Health, Office of Emergency Medical Services (N.J.A.C. Chapter 40).

Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association.

Optional but preferred certifications: Prehospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS) and Pediatric Education for Prehospital Professionals (PEEP).

Valid driver’s license in good standing.
Physical Requirements:
-
Frequently: standing, sitting, lifting 20–50 lbs, climbing, kneeling, crouching, reaching, carrying, walking, pushing, talking, hearing, and visual observation.

Constantly: lifting <20 lbs, lifting >50 lbs.

Occasionally: exposure to cleaning agents, noxious odors.

Environmental exposure: varying temperatures, noise, patient contact, and operative equipment.
Key Responsibilities:
-
Deliver prehospital care and transport in line with the Department of Transportation National Standard Curriculum, American Heart Association, American College of Surgeons, NJ State Department of Health EMS guidelines, and DEMS policy.

Conduct patient assessments, including history, vital signs, heart and lung auscultation, and neurological checks.

Perform trauma evaluations following Prehospital Trauma Life Support protocols.

Manage compromised airways using manual or adjunctive devices.

Administer oxygen and ventilation using appropriate devices.

Apply and operate Automated External Defibrillators (AED) per approved protocols.

Execute CPR and airway obstruction interventions according to AHA standards.

Perform BLS procedures including splinting, bandaging, immobilization, and obstetric care.

Assist patients with approved medications as authorized.

Conduct field triage and take incident command during mass casualty situations, activating mutual aid as needed.

Document all EMS activities accurately, including calls, refusals, and cancellations, using approved charting formats.

Conduct vehicle and equipment checks at the start of each shift and maintain accountability of keys and supplies.

Complete required documentation, including physician certifications, medical necessity forms, and transport/billing records.

Perform additional shift responsibilities as assigned by DEMS management.

Recognize patient pain indicators and provide compassionate, culturally sensitive care.

Report suspected abuse or neglect in accordance with hospital policies.
