Schedule: PRN (as needed)
Shifts: 12-hour rotations (7:00 AM–7:00 PM or 7:00 PM–7:00 AM), with primary coverage during overnight hours
Position Overview
This role is an integral part of a collaborative emergency medical services team, delivering prehospital care to patients and providing reassurance and support to families in high-pressure situations. The EMT, AEMT, or Paramedic applies clinical judgment, technical skills, and rapid decision-making to deliver care consistent with Iowa EMS Scope of Practice, certification level, and organizational guidelines.

Key Responsibilities

Evaluate patient and family needs using established medical protocols and develop appropriate treatment plans within scope of certification

Modify patient care strategies based on evolving conditions during on-scene response and transport

Serve as the primary caregiver when assigned during emergency calls or patient transport

Safely manage situations that may involve combative or emotionally distressed individuals in accordance with departmental safety policies

Complete thorough and timely documentation to ensure accurate medical and legal records

Deliver high-quality care in compliance with Iowa Department of Public Health Bureau of EMS standards and service policies

Operate ambulances or designated response vehicles safely, including during challenging weather or road conditions

Transfer patients using stretchers, stair chairs, and other approved equipment while maintaining safety and dignity

Represent the EMS department at community functions, standby events, outreach programs, and recruitment activities

Prepare detailed reports and provide testimony when required for legal, regulatory, or investigative proceedings

Conduct routine inspections of ambulances and equipment, maintaining proper inventory and readiness

Ensure ambulances are clean, sanitized, and fully prepared for service, including appropriate decontamination procedures
Education Requirements

High school diploma or equivalent
-
Completion of an approved emergency medical services education program
Licensure & Certification
-
Active Iowa certification as EMT, Advanced EMT, or Paramedic required
-
Valid Iowa driver’s license held for a minimum of three years
-
At least two years of driving experience with a clean or acceptable motor vehicle record
-
No history within the past five years of DUI/DWI, reckless driving, excessive speeding, license suspension, refusal of chemical testing, or other serious driving violations
