Position Overview

The Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) provides patient transport services within a large academic healthcare system that includes multiple hospitals and outpatient locations operated under Loma Linda University Health (LLUH). These facilities include advanced specialty designations such as Level I Trauma care, STEMI receiving services, Comprehensive Stroke Center, and Chest Pain Center accreditation.

This role operates in a high-volume, dynamic clinical setting and works under the direction of a registered nurse while supporting a patient-focused approach to care. The EMT delivers age-appropriate and developmentally suitable patient care during inter-facility transports, ensuring safety, comfort, and clinical vigilance throughout transit.

The position involves operating medical transport vehicles in accordance with all safety and regulatory standards, maintaining communication with licensed clinical staff via mobile devices, and identifying patient conditions that may indicate deterioration or adverse responses. EMTs are expected to act appropriately within their authorized scope of practice and seek guidance when clarification is needed.

Professional communication, teamwork, and a strong commitment to service excellence are essential. The EMT contributes to a respectful, collaborative workplace that supports a diverse staff and patient population. Participation in an on-call rotation may be required based on departmental operational needs. Additional duties may be assigned as necessary.


Education & Experience

  • Completion of an accredited EMT or Paramedic training program
  • At least one year of experience in EMT or Paramedic patient transport

Required Knowledge & Abilities

  • Solid understanding of EMT scope of practice within a licensed healthcare environment
  • Proficiency in fundamental patient care skills
  • Ability to read, write, and communicate clearly in English; Spanish language skills preferred
  • Comfortable using computers, printers, and standard software applications (e.g., Word, Outlook, electronic medical records)
  • Ability to operate and troubleshoot patient care and transport equipment
  • Capable of following instructions accurately and carrying out tasks independently
  • Demonstrates professional, respectful communication with patients, families, and colleagues
  • Maintains composure and professionalism in high-pressure situations
  • Applies critical thinking, sound judgment, and problem-solving skills
  • Able to manage multiple tasks, prioritize workload, and remain detail-oriented
  • Performs basic mathematical calculations and prepares written documentation
  • Physically able to meet sensory and functional demands of patient care, including distinguishing sounds, colors, odors, temperature changes, and reading medical documentation

Licensure & Certifications

  • Active California EMT or Paramedic license
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association
  • Valid California driver’s license and current automobile insurance at time of hire
